Author William Boyd gives his characters a compassionate tender humanity, their personal confusions and struggles resonate with the complexity and turmoil of the times. There is wit, black humour and charm in the narrative, chaotic situations that often tip over into farce and comedy. This is a wonderfully engrossing and fun historical read on the complications of life and identity.
