"Eliza Haywood (1693-1756) was one of the most successful writers of her time; indeed, the two most popular English novels in the early eighteenth century were Robinson Crusoe and Haywood's first novel, Love in Excess... Love in Excess is a well-crafted novel in which the claims of love and ambition are pursued through multiple storylines until the heroine engineers a melodramatic conclusion.

Haywood's frankness about female sexuality may explain the later neglect of Love in Excess. (In contract, her accomplished domestic novel, The History of Miss Betsy Thoughtless, has remained available.) Love in Excess and its reception provide a lively and valuable record of the challenge that female desire posed to social decorum."

That said, this book wasn't for me. I was led into thinking that I'd really like it, what with my professor's claims that it was the kind of book any Austen fan would enjoy. I can sort of see why she would say that, given the fact that it involves women and women's relationships with courting and such. But I think the resemblance stops there. Austen would never write so overtly about her subject matter as Haywood does, and even besides that, the writing style is very, very different. I'm not saying the book was horrible, but it's just that sometimes I felt very impatient with it and I felt like the characters had no depth sometimes.

If you do find this book and decide to read it, I just want to warn you in advance of my pencilled-in notes. I read this book for a class I took at the University on the beginnings of the novel and so I had to take notes in the book. I don't think they're too distracting but some people don't like that sort of thing, so I just thought I'd provide a warning.

I caught the book in a coffeeshop in downtown Ann Arbor. Unfortunately for the book, I had just been to the library and was having a tornado of a week, so it was temporarily lost in the crowd in my bag. Today I made time to register it and plan to read it over the next few days. I am hoping that it will aid me in keeping my sanity during my son's sleepover! : ) It is not my usual fare, but sounds interesting on several levels, so...I'll keep you posted.

I am a Master's English student and keep the books I read and write on, so I'm afraid this book won't be released any time in the near future.
