The Salmon of Doubt
4 journalers for this copy...

1000!!!!
This is the 1000th book I have registered with Bookcrossing. Amazing, really.
Bought second hand specifically for bookcrossing (my own copy is another one never being bookcrossed).
A posthumous collection of Adams's writing, mostly recovered from the hard drives of his computers after his death. An eclectic collection of articles, essays, letters, interviews, and the beginnings of a third Dirk Gently book (hence me categorising it under "other"). With a fabulous foreword by Stephen Fry, and epilogue by Richard Dawkins, both lamenting the loss of this incredible genius.
Despite how brilliantly funny Adams's writing is, I found this book seriously depressing to read, because as I read it all I could think was "we won't get any more of this". That sounds selfish, but Douglas Adams was too young to die, he had too much still to offer the world. And this book gives a taste of what might have been. Reading it, and especially reading Richard Dawkins's epilogue, I experienced again that kick to the stomach I felt when I first heard that Adams was dead.
A very special book to register as my 1000th book. And I think it might have to go somewhere special...
Registered for the "Race to a million" bookcrossing challenge.

I posted a message on the Wish Lists forum, asking people to nominate a suitably deserving bookcrosser to receive this book. I received 5 nominations: phantomreader42, marcinyc, newk, klemz, and dawnmomoffour. I decided that it really had to go to someone who was obviously already a DNA fan (because of the nature of the book, it wouldn't mean a lot to anyone else), which narrowed it down to phantomreader42 and newk. Phantomreader42 got two nominations, so I was all set to send it off to him, when he told me that he already had it. So instead, it's going to runner-up newk - hope you enjoy it!

well I guess I can cope with being number two. And as correctly pointed in Future's postcard this book has diminished the NZ total number of books by 0.1%. Hope I got my maths right.
I first heard about DA when a friend raved about the radio series of Hitch-Hikers Guide to Galaxy. I listened and read and have been a fan ever since. The warped sense of humour just does it for me.
And what an honour to have FutureCats 1000th registration. I have a bit of catching up to do.
Thanks again and thanks for the fun in the forum. I dare not try to make that a plural or I might show some ignorance.

some way into this and enjoying it. He sounds like quite a character. And we share a middle name...something I did not know. I am thinking and thinking of what I can do with this unique book....FC's 1000th rego. when I finish

aarrgh. I have not forgotten this book. I have just discovered that signing up for three or four rings a week means that sometimes I actually get 3 or 4 books in a week to read.
Nevertheless, an idea is developing for this book, when I finish it.

I still have it! And am enjoying it. I have drastically cut down the ring/ray/rabck cycle and am trying to get through the pile.

It took me too long to read this book. Recently I bit the bullet and put all other offerings aside and finished The Salmon of Doubt.
Douglas Adams will be sorely missed. His Hitchhiker's Guide books will be read and remembered for decades after his untimely death.
He has a clever quirky writing style very well demonstrated in the SOD.
Here is a favourite passage about two dogs befriended him on a visit to the USA:
"Despite the fact that they would always completely ignore me whenever we went on our walks together, they couldn't just go and have a walk without me. This revealed a profoundly philisophical bent in these dogs that were not mine, because they had worked out that I had to be there in order for them to be able to ignore me properly. You can't ignore someone who isn't there, because that's not what ignore means"
The "11 chapters" that MAY have been part of his next book are a bit disjointed and needed a lot more work if indeed they were ever intended to be published together.
The rest of the book is a collection of musings, magazine articles, book forwards and music introductions.
Overall a very satisfying read.
DA was a rare talent and the English language is lessened by his passing.
Thanks to FC for the opportunity to read this and for ignoring me while I took so long to get through it.
As long promised there is now a book box/bag in celebration of this book.
click here to see it. Go on it's worth it!

Don't worry, the cheat book will be making a reappearance any day now...

taken out of newks bookbag

it has taken me a while to get around to reading this book, and now that i have i enjoyed it. it was laugh out loud funny in places.
i too found the story at the end a bit disjointed, not quite there.
it has been an honour to read FutureCat's 1000th, it is now off as a secret santa gift.

Oh my goodness, what a surprise to receive this book from my very eager/early Secret Santa today. No, it was a shock. And even BETTER, my husband, who hasn't read a book since So Long and Thanks for All the Fish came out, is a DNA fan and will read it too. That never happens so way way cool. I feel so honoured!
And congrats to FutureCat on this being the 1000th registered book!

It took me a LONG time to finish this book, mainly because I didn't want it to end as I knew it'd be the last time I'd be reading new and different things by DA. I am a huge fan and am so honoured that I received it from my secret santa. My husband enjoyed the book as well, and finished it before me.
I'm not sure what to do with the book. I truly want to KEEP it, but I also know it was FutureCat's 1000th book and think it would be a bit selfish to keep it myself. I may just release it to a friend and have them return it when finished. Is it OK to keep a BXing book??
I have to admit to getting the sniffles when I reached the end of the Salmon of Doubt book as it ended so abruptly... his writing as well as his life. Too soon.

Flitterby, as far as I'm concerned it's perfectly ok to keep a bookcrossing book, especially one that's touched you as much as this has. So (unless newk or amberc disagree) feel free to add it to your personal collection.
