woo hoo! a City Watch mystery! How could I miss that jewel the last time?

Journal Entry 4 by spy-there at Zürich, Zürich Switzerland on Monday, June 7, 2021
The 34th Discworld novel is a crime mystery with the City Watch! Thud! is named after, and heavily features, the boardgame Thud. The game, which represents the famous "Battle of Koom Valley" between dwarfs and trolls, was developed earlier as a piece of Discworld merchandise and was inspired by the Discworld novels rather than originating in them.
As the book opens, an eminent dwarf activist is apparently murdered, which threatens to spark ethnic tensions between Ankh-Morpork's troll and dwarf communities. Commander Vimes finds himself pressured by Lord Vetinari to solve the murder quickly, before inter-species war erupts in Ankh-Morpork.
The City Watch recruits a new lance-constable: Sally von Humpeding who is a vampire. They have quite an assortment of races by now. Sergeant Angua is a werewolf, captain Carrot a dwarf in a human body (orphan, raised by dwarves), Cheery Littlebottom is a true dwarf (female with beard), corporal Nobbs looks like a dwarf, but is human (and always carries an official document to prove it), sergeant Detritus, a troll, constable Dorfl, a golem, corporal Reginald Shoe, a zombie. We meet most of them in this quirky, thrilling murder case.
