Cleo and Frank meet when they are both leaving a New Year party. Frank is a successful advertiser, Cleo's student visa is about to run out. Frank sees beauty and youth, Cleo sees security, and after a whirlwind romance they marry, but like everyone around them they are looking somehow to escape themselves. This reminded me a bit of 'A Visit from the Goon Squad' by Jennifer Egan and I suspect it's very New York zeitgeist. I really enjoyed it.
