A wonderfully written modern fairytale. The main plot of Ellen and her father Holland is of a "princess in a castle", as are some of the other minor stories. Holland's plan of finding a suitable husband for his beautiful daughter becomes much talked about all across the country and men come from far and wide in their attempt to win Ellen's hand through the almost impossible test.
The descriptions of each of the unique eucalypts and their accompanying story are as much love stories as with Ellen and her suitors.
I really enjoyed this Miles Franklin winning novel.

I once had a lovely hardback of this book, illustrated, and have often regretted giving it away. Now my eyes have alighted on this copy I shall read it again then set it travelling further.
