I'm not sure if they're really comparable -- a bit like comparing apples and oranges. I see Harry Potter as being more solidly rooted in the fantasy and children's lit genres, whereas A Series Of Unfortunate Events is a…

I love how they're simultaneously scary, cracking good adventures, and also hilariously funny! Like the names she gives people: in _Nightbirds In Nantucket_, the characters have names like Captain Casket, Dutiful Penite…

NightBIRDS In Nantucket. Not to be pedantic or anything. :) I just read that one -- it's hilarious and ever so melodramatic. Great stuff!

Here in Philly we've got Giovanni's Room (where I work), a gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender bookstore; Chris' Corner, a children's & YA bookstore; and Whodunnit?, a mystery bookstore. We've also got Robin's Books, which…

Since I've started working at a bookstore and paying more attention to reviews, etc., I've started to read a wider range of stuff. If something's selling well at the store, but I'm not familiar with the author, I'll giv…

has both atypical and typical female characters; the protagonist's best friend (whose name I'm blanking on) is sort of the classic "Angel In the House" with her devotion to her children, etc.

I really hated Heart of Darkness the first time I read it in highschool, but the second time around (in a college seminar) I loved it! I believe in my case, it was a combination of teaching style, and also just being ol…

I own SO many books, and in the past I've been lazy about donating or selling the ones I don't really want anymore. Bookcrossing has really encouraged me to share books, rather than hoarding them for the sake of having …

I've heard all kinds of buzz -- I'm looking forward to reading it.

I'd say my copies of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King. These have been among my favorite books for years, and not too long ago I purchased very nice hardcover editions with illustration…

Not dumb! "Queer" can be a synonym for "gay," although these days I mostly hear it used as a sort of catch-all for the whole LGBT spectrum. I find it particularly useful for books/authors who are not easily categoriz…

I'm hoping to get a job as a youth services librarian, so I try to keep up -- plus I just love them! Lately I've been reading lots and lots of Joan Aiken; I can't believe I never read these as a kid! I've also recently…

But this is the first time I've kept track, and I think I'm reading a lot more right now than I have been in the last couple years. I think a lot of it is that I finally finished my degree in June, so I don't have to do…

Check out _Freak Show: Presenting Human Oddities for Amusement and Profit_ by Robert Bogdan. No, it's not a how-to manual, although that's what the title sounds like! :) It's a marvelous history of freak shows, with som…

by Leslie Feinberg. It blurs the line between lesbian and transgender fiction, and has strong autobiographical elements. It's beautifully written. I'm also a big fan of: _Godspeed_ by Lynn Breedlove _Valencia_ b…

I think _Middlesex_ could be considered "queer," due to all the sexual/gender identity stuff. Plus intersex/hermaphrodite issues have sort of been part of the queer umbrella in some circles for quite some time.

I can only think of one that I couldn't finish, and one that I thought was pretty awful but finished anyway. The first was _Beauty Queen_ by Linda Glovach (who has come out as co-author, it seems, of _Go Ask Alice_), wh…

I just received a copy of _Gut Symmetries_ by Jeanette Winterson from another Bookcrosser. On the first page is written "pg. 129," and on page 129 a beautiful quote is circled: "Would it be naturual? You are not of …

I liked it. There's nothing really earthshaking in Paolini's prose or plotting, but he keeps the action moving, and there are some really intriguing ideas. I liked how there were "rules" for the way the magic works, an…

at times her repeated insistance that she was NOT a nerdy/geeky child grated on me. I WAS one of those kids who sometimes really preferred to spend recess with her nose in a book.

I highly recommend _The Ghost Writer_ -- I just read it, and I thought it was fabulous! I'd also recommend an anthology edited by Ellen Datlow called _The Dark: New Ghost Stories_. While I liked some of the stories b…

Actually, what surprised me recently was reading a number of reviews on http://www.bibliophil.org wherein people remarked that they thought the series was too scary/negative for young readers. While kids vary, and while …

When I was a kid, I read all of my older brother's "Boy's Life" magazines (I, too am a girl). I liked the fiction and the comics best. :) My younger brother used to really like my Babysitter's Club books, too.
