Extended Profile
My grandmother inadvertently taught me to read before I started to school, and I have been a reader ever since. I like natural history, British mysteries except for Sherlock Holmes, Tony Hillerman, cookbooks, spirtuality (as opposed to religiosity), biography, autobiography, memoir, travel, gardening and needlework books. Lately I have become interested in fiction by women writers about women. We just returned from a vacation on the Alabama Gulf coast and I returned with an armful of volumes by Southern women writers.

When my children were growing up, I was always a library mother. I have also been a Laubach literacy tutor. I believe reading is the most important skill we can give our children.

I am a Master Gardner, albeit an inactive one at present. I love music, almost any kind; my favorites are piano concerti and piano jazz. I also love trumpet music, rhythm and blues and chant. I love ballet and Broadway musicals but could live without opera. My parents were talented musicians; my talent is appreciation.

Our small town (pop. under l400) has no bookstore, but there are some in the county seat and in the state capitol about 30 miles away. Travel always involves a search for bookstores, especially independent ones, as well as visits to botancal gardens and wildlife refuges.

I am fortunate to have lived in several states and to have had the opportunity to travel some. For the past two and a half years, I have been pretty well confined to home. During that time, I have begun to learn to use a computer and to start a memoir of childhood for our children and nephew; they are young adults who did not have an opportunity to know my parents and are full of questions about them, my home town, etc. These efforts and books have saved my sanity!

Having had to give up regular volunteer work and my study groups for some time now, participating in this brilliant scheme really appeals to me. I am able to get out some under my own steam now, and I can hardly wait to release my first book.
