Extended Profile
I discovered the magic of reading when I was about 5 years old and have relished the book life ever since. As an only child, I was often surrounded by adults so I used books as a way for more companionship. I have engaged in several professions in my life
- counseling, teaching, writing/researching, public speaking - and, although I have enjoyed all of them, there has never been a replacement for the pleasure that reading has brought to my life.
Books give people the opportunity to process and understand their own journeys as the stories proceed with someone else's adventures. It is a rare and unique treasure. I have worked with many young adults who were reading-phobic and, when they feel ready to start dealing with that, they often asked what they should start to read first. Anything and everything, I reply. Once you are reading, you will continue on. Start with magazines, cereal boxes, newspapers...it doesn't matter. When they realize the magic that can be contained within words, they will branch out on their own. What a pleasure it is to watch that happen.
Well-written books will take you wherever you wish to go - and some places that you hadn't even dreamed you could go!
