Extended Profile
I worked for New York State for almost 30 years. I was hired as an Occupational Therapy Assistant and worked with profoundly retarded people for a number of years but then became the union leader of the Public Employees Federation. I was the council leader and labor management chair for OMRDD (Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disability. I retired in 1998 at age 55. I then went to work for an addiction treatment agency (FLACRA) first as a per diem in outpatient programs and a half way house and then as senior counselor for the halfway house. I retired from there in March of this year and am really enjoying my freedom. I have a son who is a chemist and lives in Layfayette NY with his wife Laurie who is a nurse. I was married for about 17 years to John I. In1983 I met another John (after hubby and I split), John C. We have lived together ever since with our pets. Currently we have 4 cats, Pumpkin, Pippin (both about 16 years old), Pumpkin - about 9 years old and Jack who is about 2 years old. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been in recovery and active in AA for almost 24 years. I spend a lot of time helping people in the program. I am very interested in politics and despair of the direction the country is going. I write letter, make phone calls, and have recently become involved in the local democratic party. I am a part of Move-On.org and have had one house party. Books I am interested cover a range of areas, most any fiction except those gooey romance novels, non-fiction on addiction, political issues, women, biography, autobiography, etc. Earlier in my live I was involved in NOW and was Legislative VP in NOW-NY. Recently I was on a save a book campaign. The local library had a sale and gave away left over books. I got several boxes and spread the word as they throw away those not taken. I did well but many were thrown away. Years ago I read that the average American reads 1 book a year. I was never average in that area and began in 1968 to keep tract of the books and magazines I read. I have read over 1500 books to date.
