I'm an English teacher in Italy (ELT = English Language Teacher). I also studied German literature.
My favourite types of books are essays (history - especially history of ideas, psychology, literature) and poetry (e.g. John Donne, Dylan Thomas, T. S. Eliot, Frost, Dickinson, Rilke). I used to love crime stories and whodunnits as a teenager and in my university years (Christie, Ellery Queen, and many, many others).
At university I had to read lots of novels, so maybe that's why I prefer poetry now. Anyway, I loved Tristam Shandy and I enjoied Jane Austen's and Henry James's novels. I also happened to read short stories by the Indian author Narayan whose style I appreciate for its terseness. I love Kleist, I find Thomas Mann is great, I like Boll. As to Italian literature,Calvino is one of my favourites.
There's so much other nice stuff I like... when it comes to theatre, I prefer watching it, but how can one omit to mention Shakespeare? I also like Pinter, Tennessee Williams.
