It's time to do some serious culling of books in my "To Be Read" pile. I might live a long, healthy life, but there is no way I'll ever read all the books now in my possession. I chose this as one of the books to begin moving on.

Farewell and happy traveling, little book!

This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for some time, waiting to be read. Somehow, with the seemingly never-ending string of school shootings in the news, I never could quite find the motivation to pick this up and start it. And when I finally did, I found the beginning so off-putting that I almost didn't continue.

Written in the form a a series of letters from Kevin's mother to his father, the book begins with an exploration of the couple's lives and relationship before they had children and the ultimate decision to have them. Honestly, I found it hard to like the narrator...she didn't strike me as a particularly sympathetic or likeable character. But I pushed on, and the book became more compelling the further into I got.

Ultimately, this is a mother's attempt to understand how her son could become a killer. Because we only really see him from his mother's perspective, it feels a bit one-sided, but this book suggests that Kevin had an inherent nasty, possibly even evil nature to him from the very beginning, one that his mother felt that his father didn't recognize or appreciate.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from this book, exactly, but it certainly wasn't what I found in the book. This is not an attempt to find a broader meaning behind school shootings generally, nor does it appear to suggest that there are any lessons in this story that could be used in the real world. Instead, this is a deeply troubling examination of the relationships between the members of this fictional family and how they led to such a tragic end. And the ending had a twist that I did not see coming (which I will not spoil), one that was both shocking and yet seemed obvious after-the-fact, and which shed an entirely different light on the entire book.
