Journal Entry 1 by davemurray101 from Christiansted, US Virgin Islands US Virgin Islands on Monday, June 27, 2011
Many of Cuba's intellectuals embraced the Castro regime, but Guillermo Cabrera Infante, who criticized it, was condemned as a traitor and forced into exile. From this bitter experience, which included his hospitalization for mental collapse, came the vivid sketches of Cuban life that made up the acclaimed "View of Dawn from the Tropics". In exile he revised this work into "Three Trapped Tigers", a savage comedy that catapulted him into the first rank of Latin American novelist.

A truly weird book I just keep coming back to. Shame that such brilliant cutting edge literature was snuffed out by the rise of Castro.

This book arrived while I was in Italy so apologies if it arrived weeks ago and you've been waiting for it to be journalled. Thanks to davemurray101 for posting this all the way from Australia and for another bookring. Three other rays to read first but am hoping it won't be long before this book is travelling again.

*Edit - just looked at davemurray101s release info for this book and clearly it made a super fast journey and has not been waiting around for too long!

Started reading this yesterday and have a lot of train commutes this week so hopefully will be munching through about fifty pages or so per day!

Journal Entry 7 by shovelmonkey1 at Liverpool, Merseyside United Kingdom on Friday, November 11, 2011
I'm not going to give this book a rating as it would be unfair! I didn't get very far into this at all as I just couldn't find a way to enjoy and get into the rhythm and style of the writing. In the interests of not being a ring-hog I'm sending this on to Icila... maybe I'll seek out another copy of this book some other time, but not now. Thanks to davemurray101 for including me in this one.

The book arrived. It's the first one on the stack!

Journal Entry 13 by EmgeeNL at Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Monday, January 23, 2012
To start with, I found this a difficult book and can understand why some of the above readers didn't finish it. I managed to read the whole book, bu had problems understanding it now and then. There are a lot of references to other books and I don'tr think I got them all. I enjoyed some of the parts though. Especially the part where a trip is described in various ways.

I already have Okyrhoe's address and the book is wrapped to sent out. Now I only need a chance to go to the post office.

I so enjoyed reading this book; I loved the wordplay and I wish I was fluent in Spanish to have been able to read the original.
I will definitely be looking for my own permanent copy.

Journal Entry 18 by kingfan30 at Corby Glen, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Monday, March 26, 2012
Book has arrived safe and well, I will get to it as soon as I can, thanks for sharing :-)

24 April 2012 - On starting this book I wondered what on earth was going on. I then got to a point where I could follow the story although was still not sure what the book was all about. Then the book took another route and I could not work out if this was a new story with new characters of if I had just missed something and it was still the original characters. I got over three quarters of the way through before I gave up and just skimmed though the rest, I just did not have a clue what was going on.

Just a quick update.

I'm really struggling with this book but am about 250 pages through. I hope to get it finished this week once I lock myself in the library for some peace until it's finished. Sorry for the delay.

Journal Entry 23 by Danielle23 at Sunderland, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Okay, I finally admit defeat. This is only the 2nd 1001 book I couldn't finish and after the parts with Mr and Mrs Campbell I decided I'd had enough. A PM has gone to katrinat and hopefully the book should be travelling again very soon.

Okay, I give up.. I liked the writing style, but it was too confusing trying to figure out what was going on and I just didn't feel like struggling on for so many pages.

So, the book is now in the post, on its way to 4evagreen.
I hope you'll enjoy it more than I did. :)

Journal Entry 28 by 4evagreen at High Peak, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Thursday, March 7, 2013
This book arrived safely with perfect timingas I had just finished my previous read so will be able to start straight away with it. Thanks for sharing.

Journal Entry 29 by 4evagreen at High Peak, Derbyshire United Kingdom on Friday, March 15, 2013

The story such as it is, is little more than a group of friends recalling anecdotes about their late night jaunts around a Havana's pre-Castro nightclubs. OK I get that it is full of puns, allusions and clever word-games but come the end of it I was no wiser than when I started it whilst much of the humour just passed me by. Not a book that will live long in the memory I fear.

Journal Entry 31 by RonOren at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, March 20, 2013
This just arrived; thanks for sending it through, 4evagreen. Reading through the earlier JEs, I'm getting a little anxious about this book, now - it sounds like it's pretty hard work... But I'll certainly give it a go!

I've just started another book, so won't get to read this one for a little while. As I'm just about to leave for a long weekend away, I'll bring it along - maybe I'll get to start this on the flight. Otherwise, I should be getting to it in a week or so.

Journal Entry 32 by RonOren at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Sunday, April 7, 2013
I'm afraid I have to agree with some of the earlier journalers about this book: I cannot get into it. I've struggled my way through 150 pages of it, but still cannot follow the story (in fact, am not sure there is a story) and have no idea who the characters are. This is hardly helped by the fact that the word "I" seems to migrate from character to character between chapters, often without any hint as to which character is narrating for a good few pages.

I don't do this very often, but I have to give up on the book; it's just not my thing at all. So I'll pass it on to hawksgirl soon, in the hope that she will appreciate this better.

I'm sorry I couldn't do this justice, but it's good to try at least; so thanks for sharing davemurray101!
