Thanks very much for this Pookledo. It's a former Booker winner so should be pretty good.
This reminded me a lot of Salman Rushdies's 'Midnight's Children'; or at least the first part of it did. The narrative style is very similar. But whereas MC meanders fitfully between reality and fantasy, 'The White Tiger' stays firmly in the former.
OK, so it's an exagerated tale of reality, but it's certainly not fantasy. And that's what makes it pack so much of a punch. Adiga pulls the reader through a tale which disgusts, outrages, and yet somehow also enchants. Despite not liking Balman, I still wanted him to succeed. Thus the novel's morality is complex. Is Balman worse, better, or just the same virtue-wise as the landlords he despises? Does the fact that the poor man's situation is hopeless excuse the narrator's stomach-churning actions?
A very interesting novel about modern India.
