I decided to pick up Kathryn Stockett's "The Help" after seeing a preview for the upcoming summer movie based on the novel. It's always better to read the book before seeing the movie! At first, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the book, as the writing style took a bit to get used to, almost felt like a chick-lit/summer read... but within the first hundred pages, I was completely sucked in! The book definitely has much more substance than fluff!

The book is set in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960's and is about a woman who decides to write a book from the African-American housekeeper's perspective and in turn expose her friends and family that are their employers. The book is not only about taking a stand for what is right, but it is also a friendship story. It had a lot of heart and was very poignant. I hope the movie version does the book justice!

Also, the end of the book has an interesting note from the author regarding her inspiration for the novel.
