This was an incredible story. It was written so well, the imagery was vivid, and the storyline was gripping. It is a story about a family that has more than its share of secrets. All Ruth knows is that her mother drowned when she was little, and that she drowned too...but somehow didn't die. But she remembers more than she realizes. Her Aunt Amanda, who raised her after her mother's death, holds all the answers to all the questions, but she isn't telling and Ruth isn't asking, at least not at first. Only when the threat of disaster looms over her does Amanda spill the beans and the gaps in the story get filled in.

This was a well written story and I really felt for Amanda because of the private hell she was going through. And how her life seem to unravel.

This book kept me spellbound from the very first page. I enjoyed the story's complexity and the balanced detail in its narrative. Anita Shreve's review on the jacket describes, "a strong sense of portent and unusually vivid characters." The inside jacket notes pronounce it, "deftly written and emotionally powerful." I couldn't say it better. Excellent!
