Well, I've just started this (I read maybe 50 pages last night) and I'm totally lost as to what to expect out of this book. I'm trying to not read the back cover to keep me in suspense. Angela Carter's descriptions, especially of people, are some of the best I've ever read. But I can't shake this sense of menace and impending doom while reading the book. I am very fearful for the characters. (It doesn't help any that the cover is very creepy). I mean, it is rare that recently orphaned British children sent to live with their Uncle (whom they have never met) end up in happy circumstance (at least in Literature and film *smile*. Still, very different and interesting, and I am LOVING her descriptions of people.

Ack! Ack! I fear I may have guessed a really gruesome horrible secret that will be unveiled later in the novel (I'm on page 150). Nothing on the back says anything about a horrible secret, and such a thing may not even be there, but this awful thought regarding a plot development just came to me. I won't mention it here, in case it turns out to be a plot spoiler. But, if I'm totally wrong, i will let people know as my surmise is chilling and would make a good plot.

This book is just permeated with a sense of menace and impending doom. Very dark. The back cover calls it "gothic." It makes me sort of nervous when reading it late at night. *cue spooky music*

Okay, I was totally wrong about my guess (that real people were being killed and turned into puppets, a la "The Wax Museum"). There is still a "surprise" at the end, well, several really. This book was very different. I enjoyed her turn of phrase, but the plot was very weird and different. The ending left me with a "hmmm..." feeling. Oh well. I'm still glad I read it, but very strange.

Taking a road trip up to Canada and I'm thinking that the Western Washington University students (and/or citizens of the Fairview area) would really dig this book. I don't know where I'll leave it. Some likely gas station, probably. Good luck little book. *Crosses her fingers*
