Gritty, realistic, baldy stark! But yet I felt sympathetic toward the narrator. He never excused his circumstances, he never made apologies for what he was. As a rule I would dislike him intensely, but by the end of this I felt sorry for him.
Paul Howard is an amazing story writer. I have read many RO'CKs, and also the Gaffers, and he has kept me turning the pages, regardless of the genre.

I can't say I "enjoyed" this book but it was certainly worth reading. It gives you a real insight into life in a prison, in this case Mountjoy Jail in north Dublin. While I'd hate to meet any of the inmates especially in a dark lane, I ended up feeling sorry for the guys especially those dependent on drugs. The hopelessness and pain of their situation is horrific and very evident in the story but there are also some very funny moments too.
