FANTASTIC FICTION Synopsis: Ellen's just sixteen, but she's dying-and nobody knows why. So when she's sent to her gran's house she's relieved to find a distraction in the form of her great-grandmother's diaries, written when she was Ellen's age. As Ellen reads, she becomes increasingly embroiled in the fascinating story of her life. Who is the enigmatic and seductive Count her great-grandmother was supposed to marry? And why is it that Ellen and her great-grandmother resemble each other so much that they could be twins? But Ellen's condition is worsening, and it's becoming more and more difficult for her to distinguish her own life from the nightmarish events recorded in the diaries. Is the past destroying her, or do the diaries hold the key to Ellen's survival...?

Blood Sinister by Celia Rees is certainly a tale to make the blood run cold and is a enthralling supernatural thriller owing much more to the original Dracula story than the multitude of supernatural vampire romance that is currently popular. Blood Sinister sits more clearly in the classic horror fiction camp. Not a gore fest thank goodness, though that I wouldn’t expect gratuitous bloody horror from Celia Rees, whose writing always leans toward the more thoughtful and insightful. Here there’s a steady balance of slowly creeping horror afflicting a hastily gathered bunch of protagonists who with taught nerves finally become poised for swift action once the need to tackle the danger has been perceived.

Thinking of the short length of this novel and the fact two significant plots intertwine; Ellen’s contemporary story and; the historical diary details of the great grand-mother Ellen was named after, there are necessarily a number of key characters. So given the books short length its delightful that the characterisation is as developed as it is and the key characters have a realistic presence and are engaging individuals. Impressive too, that the story telling aspect, is as ever, with Celia Rees extremely involving. The descriptive qualities of the novel create a mesmerising read and the suspense building stealthily in this through psychological thriller is so gripping it’s difficult to put the book down.
