An interesting read

For some reason I can't fathom, I found this book very heavy going - it took me well over a week to read it.

The blurb on the back cover compares it to William Golding's "The Inheritors", presumably because it deals with the last of the Neanderthals giving way to modern Man. But there the similarity ends - where Golding was writing a Realist novel, Attanasio has written a fantasy. I was struck more by its similarity to Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy!

One feature that I would associate with the Realist tradition is that the pace of the plot was very uniform. The story was built up painstakingly brick by brick, and the level of suspense kept constant right to the end.

Anyway, anyone who wants this book is welcome to it.

I picked this book up last year outside Coalville library & I am still trying to read it. Normally I can zip through a book but, unusually for me, I am finding this one very heavy going. My reading has also been slowed down by firstly moving house & secondly getting badly burnt in a house fire at the new property. Will hopefully be forwarding on the book in the next few weeks.
