What a lovely surprise this little book was. I know of the play but haven't read it so I look forward to doing so and hopefully pass it on in the same way I received it, maybe with another of my own.
I LOVE the size of this book! As pennina said in her note, "perfect handbag size"! It came in the mail with this book. Thanks, pennina! I can't wait to have a reason to pull it out of my handbag and read it :)
Well, I did have a reason to pull it out of my handbag today and read it! I was at the post office, mailing a package to a friend, and releasing this, and the line was almost out the door! I was able to start it and get a good way into it before being waited on. I've never read this, although certainly have heard/read literary allusions to it.
How entertaining! It wasn't at all what I expected, and I almost laughed out loud at some parts. I couldn't describe it better than the back of the book: "The most famous, bawdy satire of Ancient Greece"
"The women of Greece are weary of the extended war between Athens and Sparta. Led by Lysistrata, they decide to take control of the situation by capturing the Acropolis, seat of Athenian walth, and by going on a sex strike. There is to be no more love-making until peace has been established. Suffering severely, the men agree to a peaceful settlement, with their wives -- and with their enemies. Aristophanes' ribald anti-war fantasy is published with two of his other plays in Penguin Classics"
A couple especially entertaining parts of the play: A line by Calonice, "We must show that it's not for nothing that women are called impossible." During one of the interactions between the men and the women, the Leader of the men says, "Let's not be all wrapped up, let's show we're men, Not sandwiches!" HA! this I found pretty funny :)
I'm glad I can finally say I've read this, and will be sending it on shortly.

Off to nekki2976 with this book. Travel well, little tiny book!
Tagged along on a bookring. It's been on my "English Teacher Mentality" victim list (for buying) for awhile. I even put it on the course outline I created for a high school theatre class.
Now I get to read it!
Thanks Antof9

Yes, well, I'll be removing this from the reading list for the theatre studies class, but will definately refer to it.
The comedy was classically bawdy, and reading it while watching the Athens Olympics made it even better.
Thanks for sharing, Estherase.

Going out to Deenbat in Priority Envelope, so it should be there soon.
another great surprise in the envelope with A Traveller in Time - thanks, gang!! I hope I can get through this one quickly enough to keep them together, bu at the rate with which I tend to forget my inclusion in rings, and the fact that my new uni term starts in just days, I'm a bit worried...
I too have heard of this play but never read it, and I love the format of the little book - so convenient! Looking forward to reading it, and if for some reason it doesn't go out with the others I'll find a cool release for it so that it will continue to have interesting travels...

This nice surprise came with Uttley's Traveller in Time and Starkey's book on Elizabeth. Thank you all!
