I first read The Plains of Passage twelve years ago during my freshman year of High School. I finished it off and was expectantly waiting for the fifth book to be released. Little did I know that it would be a wait of over ten years untill that book was published.

When I recieved The Shelters of Stone in a trade from smartypants I had intended to use it as a chance to go back and re-read all of Jean M. Auel's Earth's Children series in order from The Clan of the Cave Bear through The Shelters of Stone. However, due to books being packed up due to storage space the only one I could find was The Valley of the Horses. So needing something to read on the bus while running errands I finally picked up The Shelters of Stone. I read the first couple of pages and put it down again. I tried again a couple weeks later, and this time I was able to get through the first chapter and into the "meat" of the story.

Once again Auel has brought us her readers to a wonderful telling of the world while it was young. We find ourselves at the end of Ayla and Jhondular's journey back to his people. We get to witness both the joys and hardships that Ayla lives through as she discovers acceptance from some but not all of the cave. We travel with Ayla and Jhondular to the tribe's summer camp, and witness their matramonial ceremony, and we witness Ayla giving birth, and accepting the call to join in training as a Zelandonni (a spiritual leader of the people).

I really liked this book alot, and am now awaiting the sixth and final book in the series.

Hopefully it is not as long a wait as the one for this book was.

I'm planning on leaving this one as a wild release in the OBZ here in Chicago at Mojo's Cafe.

It seems to be a good place to leave this where hopefully some one who wants to read the book can find it.

Released on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Mojoe's Cafe 2256 W. Roscoe in Chicago, Illinois USA.

Since this was the fifth book in the series, I wasn't comfortable with just wild releasing it. So it has been added to the OBCZ's book shelves, and hopefully some one who wants to read this book will take it home :)

My daughter found the book, knew I was familiar with the author, knew I hadn't read it and passed it on to me. I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend the book to anyone who has read the other four.
