How do you catch a serial killer when the term hasn't even been invented yet?
How do you predict where the killer might strike next? Who it might be?
And no, we're not talking Jack the Ripper here. This is New York at the end of the 19th century, when those who study the human mind (and its darker sides) are known as "alienists". (It is, in fact, a sort of sequel to Carr's earlier book, "The Alienist".)
And it starts with the kidnapping of an infant.
This is not an "easy read" and perhaps not for the squeamish...but it's a very good book.
