This is the journal of Cassandra Mortmain; an extraordinary account of life with her equally extraordinary family. First, there is her eccentric father. Then there is her sister, Rose - beautiful, vain and bored - and her stepmother, Topaz, and artist's model who likes to commune with nature. Finally, there is Stephen, dazzlingly handsome and hopelessly in love with Cassandra...
This was sort of like a 1930s (or 1940s) version of 'Bridget Joans' in a way. I thought it was much better written, though. Lovely book. Shame it languished on Mt. TBR for so long.
I agree with KiwiKat - this is a lovely book. Weird, but the story really draws you in, and the characters and setting are so lovingly described.

I picked this up at our booksale & scavenger hunt meetup, thanks for bringing it Futurecat and hello Kiwikat -writing to you is high on my list of things to do! I shall add this to my reading pile, hopefully it won't be too long before I get to it.
Really enjoyed this!! I loved how it was written!! Cassandra is such a wonderful diarist and is such a strong character that I had trouble putting this down.
I will take this along to the next Dunedin meetup and see if I can tempt someone else.
