I was introduced to Julia Alvarez's work via In the Time of the Butterflies, the book chosen for the 1998 Campus Honors Program Convocation at the University of Illinois. After reading this incredible book, and having heard Ms. Alvarez speak about it, she was nearly instantly cemented as one of my favorite writers. She has a wonderful style that allows her to weave a compelling story back and forth between characters and across time.
