Love and life are tricky matters for Layfayette Proulx: kicked out by his wife of fifteen years, his mistress, Judi, temporarily puts him and his dog up while he embarks on writing the Great American Novel. Futile marriage counselling, Judi's dysfunctional white-trash family and a steady stream of rejection letters are starting to wear him down - but when Judi gets sick, Laf's life gets serious and the knockabout farce becomes a dark but redemptive tragedy.
