A small collection of short stories from an author born in London of Bengali parents and grew up in my home of Rhode Island, New England, USA

Sometimes sad, sometimes resigning, often delightful. I enjoyed it thoroughly

This looked like "Delifrance" property when I picked it up to read while munching lunch. Maybe others thought that and that is why it took so long to register as being "found". A very nice surprise to find it was from Bookcrossing.

This is a book of short stories, so I will add some comments after reading some. Looks promising so far. Does "craftienancy" have a favourite?

The aim of the following journal entry is to help you decide whether you should read this book of short stories. The answer won't always be yes, especially if you don't wish to be reminded about the myriad disappointments of real life.

The author JHUMPA LAHIRI is a master of creating word pictures. Nothing new about that, but she also illuminates emotions that many have, but that don't seem to get expressed elsewhere.

The title of "THIS BLESSED HOUSE" is representative, but in an expected way.
Read this if you want to learn what "love isn't".

Do you think that infidelity is sustainable, either as the wanderer or the "other" partner? Read "SEXY" before you partake.

My favourite was "A REAL DURWAN" which communicates what can happen when the mob rules, and there is too much "keeping up with the Jones'".

Both "MRS. SEN" and "WHEN MR. PIRZADA CAME TO DINE" remind us of the disappointment felt when significant relationships evaporate for reasons other than a falling out.

More disappointments for the linguist/guide in "INTERPRETER OF MALADIES". He doesn’t recognize early enough the interest in him is just self absorption on her part. And the unrealistic hope of a significant relationship flutters away in the wind.

STOP PRESS.

Just this morning read "THE TREATMENT OF BIBI HALDAR" and "THE THIRD AND FINAL CONTINENT". Both a little more optimistic than the rest. Especially liked the one about BIBI and how what appears to be a dreadful event at the time turns out to be just what the doctor should have ordered.
