I read this a looooooooooong time ago and remember liking it, but can't remember the story, etc.... Saw a copy for cheap at the used book store so thought i would pick it up and either give it another go, or else have it for wold release, knowing that it was a good one... :)

From the back: "As Michaels follows Jakob across two continents, she lets us witness his transformation from a half-wild casualty of the Holocaust to an artist who extracts meaning from its abyss. Filled with mysterious symmetries and rendered in heart-stopping prose, "Fugitive Pieces" is a triumphant work, a book that should not so much be read as it should be surrendered to."

This is a fabulous book. As much poetry as prose, and as much philosophy as history as magical realism as biography as allegory. So much to think about, to harvest, to make you think.

In the end, I find this book overwhelming--- the characters painfully raw and sad, with their assorted stories both tragic and intimate, and the consequent insights almost too true for comfort.

I am not complaining. But it is not a book that you read and then put down. It demands attention and reflection. I love books that force me to question so much, to demand more of myself and others, to remember what happened and what matters, to actively seek the humanity in others and to continually search for the peace and purpose that we are all striving for in life.

What I take from this book, in part: transcendance, divinity, and ultimately happiness, is something we can strive for by cultivating our own humanity and learning to live with all that this entails (both the beautiful and the terrible). Salvation through truth.

Beautiful book. Will try to remember more of it this time around. Though i imagine this book will find its way into my life again at some point...

Will release soon for others to enjoy.
