One thing I will always remember from this book is when she talks about her grandmother switching her for saying "by the way." Her grandmother interprets Jesus as "the way" and that she is taking his name in vane when she used the phrase. I too, believe that Jesus is "the way" but I've never thought about the phrase "by the way." I'll probably never think of it the same way again. I'm reserving this book as my "A" entry in the alphabet author bookring.

It took me a long time to read this book because I set it aside a couple times for a period of months. However, I finally have finished it. The life that Maya Angelou describes is very different from any life that I have experienced. Growing up black in the deep South is almost indescribable but Maya does a good job explaining the psychological and emotional journey as well as the daily life in the deep South in the 1940s. There are a lot of painful experiences honestly described. In the final chapters of the book, Maya is living in California.
