From the cover:
'...before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire, Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green & knidly island that had so long been his home. His aim was to take stock of the nation's public face and private parts (as it were) and to analyse what precisely it was he loved so much about a country that had produced Marmite, a military hero whose dying wish was to be kissed by a fellow named Hardy, place names like Fareigh Wallop and Shellow Bowells, people who said 'Mustn't grunble, and Gardeners' Question Time'.

I think he spotted us!!So much to recognise in this view of the islands by Bryson, yet he does have a different take on things that seem so familiar. The best bits really made me smile...Is Bryson as good when looking at his own country??

Sent as a surprise for Folia - in return for the surprise she sent me. I hope you enjoy this American look at my homeland!

Thanks, Fofum! It was a surprise! I looked at the package and thought... Hm! I didn't do any trading lately with someone in UK (nice stamps too). I've never read anything by B.Bryson and love to discover new authors so I was really happy to receive that (surprises are fun!). And it looks pretty good!
Does it qualify as British humour?

I really enjoyed that book. Bryson made me laughed quite a few times but you can also feel how much he really loves England (oups! Great Britain, sorry). I don't know England that much myself but after reading that book, I wouldn't mind going for a visit. On the negative side, I felt sometimes that it was just "I took the train saw this saw that and took the train again" but only in some parts of the book - in other chapters, he really gives interesting historical background and other details so I guess it compensates for the less detailed ones. It seemed to me he had more to say about the Northern part of England - didn't say much, for example, about London while the part about Liverpool was very interesting.
Anyway, I would definitively recommend it to anyone planning to travel to Great Britain.
I might bring it to the next Montreal's meet-up to offer it to other Bookcrossers.
