BLURB: "Anne Frank's tales from the Secret Annex: The candid, poignant, unforgettable writing of the young girl whose own life story has become an everlasting source of courage and inspiration
Hiding from the Nazis in the "Secret Annexe" of an old office building in Amsterdam, a 13 year old girl named Anne Frank became a writer. The now famous diary of her private life and thoughts reveals only part of Anne's story, however. This book completes the portrait of this remarkable and talnted young author.
Tales from the Secret Annex is a complete collection of Anne Frank's lesser-known writings: short stories, fables, personal reminiscences, and an unfinished novel. Here, too, are portions of the diary originially withheld from publication by her father. By turns fantastical, rebellious, touching, funny, and heartbreaking, these writings reveal the astonishing range of Anne Frank's wisdom and imagination -- as well as her indomitable love of life. It is a testament to this determined young woman's extraordinary genius and to the persistent strength of the creative spirit."
While I don't think this "completes the portrait" (which is pretty much impossible) it is an interesting look beyond just her diary. I don't think the writings are all the wondrous, but the optimism which comes through despite the facts of her life, and the periodic stories which echo an inevitable defeat and depression, creates a picture of a truly special girl. It's a good, quick read, especially if you just have a few minutes free at a time.
