A Million Little Pieces is a very honest and real depiction of what it is like to be an addict in a rehabilitation center. The author James Frey gives a day by day account of his six weeks in rehab. The novel is written in a way that is very easy to understand and honestly explains how he is feeling each moment. The book is a mystery at first because many details are left out and then slowly come together throughout the story. You wonder throughout the book about his past and all his issues that are not revealed right away. He reveals things using flashbacks at different times in the story so that you slowly understand what he has gone through. It is unbelievable how addicted he is and how long he has been addicted. At only 23, James Frey has been an alcohol addict for ten years and a crack addict for three. At the rehab center he is told by doctors that if he uses again he is going to die. James ponders this throughout the whole book about death and what it means to him. He feels as if it would almost be easier to just end all the pain than to deal with it. There are points throughout the book where he tries to leave, but he decides to be brave and stay. It is amazing the things that happen to him while there such as getting sick multiple times a day, having root canals with noanesthesia, and having crazy user dreams. He has to overcome all of these problems there as well as getting along with the other patients there. He does encounter a couple fights because of his anger which is one of the problems he deals with. Someone who helps him with that is Lilly, a fellow patient there. I find their relationship very interesting since they can relate to one another so well. It seems that they are connected on another, deeper level that many cannot see or understand. James is a very special person and i admire his honesty throughout the whole book. Read it to see how James ends up!
