On 5th December, me and a friend went to the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies open day - http://www.swhp.co.uk/ There was a bookstall and I just couldn't resist. Bought this one as I have heard good things about this author.

This book reminds me of the 'gentle' ghosts stories that MR James and similar authors used to write, rather than the blood and guts, scare a second fests that I read more often! The story follows Freddie, who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his brother in the War. He travels to France, thinking that a change of scenery might help him move on. But when the weather worsens, his car goes off the road and he is left to walk through the mountains until he comes to a small town. He is welcomed into the hostel and given a room, then invited to celebrate the local Saint's day. He goes along, but can't find his host. Instead, he meets a young woman called Fabrisse, who chats with him throughout the meal. When soldiers suddenly burst in and start attacking the people, Fabrisse and Freddie flee into the countryside, where she tells him her story. In the morning, Freddie finds himself back at the hostel, fighting a fever, but still hearing her voice echoing in the air.

To be honest, there is nothing really surprising here. After all, the title kind of gives it away. But the writing is quite good and the story draws you through it well. I enjoyed Freddie's 'journey' and admire his stubborness to find out the truth, although he has to be pretty stupid not to have guessed it earlier!! Still, a good read, but not one that I would return to again.

I read this book a while back but it looks like I never journalled it... and then forgot the book on my shelves...

From what I can remember, this was a quick read that felt promising to start with and ended being a bit too predictable, the main issue for me being that it was too short and missed the developments and details that I had loved in Labyrinth. Still it was an enjoyable read!

I will look into "wild"-releasing, possibly in the office - let's share the love at work! :-)
