Enduring Love

"On a windy spring day in the Chilterns, the calm, organized life of science writer Joe Rose is shattered when he witnesses a tragic accident: a hot-air balloon with a boy trapped in its basket is being tossed by the wind, and in the attempt to save the child, a man is killed. A stranger named Jed Parry joins Rose in helping to bring the balloon to safety. But unknown to Rose, something passes between Parry and himself on that day--something that gives birth to an obsession in Parry so powerful that it will test the limits of Rose's beloved rationalism, threaten the love of his wife, Clarissa, and drive him to the brink of murder and madness. Brilliant and compassionate, this is a novel of love, faith, and suspense, and of how life can change in an instant."
A great reading, with some suspense and unexpected twists.
Just like in "Atonement", the story revolves around one particular event in one single day, which changes the lives of the characters. Also, in both books, the story could easily be told in a few words, but the author manages to deliver a thorough and detailed account, mostly in the first person, and hold our attention throughout the entire narrative.
As the story is told almost exclusively by one of the characters, at some point we feel trapped in his view and we are cleverly led by the author to question the narrator's mental sanity and the veracity of his testimony.
Apart from the story and the writing, I also enjoyed the "science" parts: the narrator writes articles and books on scientific subjects for the general public, and we get to follow his digression on 2 or 3 interesting topics (for example, the role played by the "smile" in human evolution).

The book was sent yesterday to Porto Santo for a special book release by Arvores. Farewell :)
The book has arrived completely destroyed. It was the first time something like that happened, in more than 11 years of BookCrossing. I'm truly sorry for that.

Obrigado, ichigochi. E desculpa.
