Got it in the mail a few dys ago.
It always surprises me how much I enjoy Stephen King. While I'm not going to tumble all over myself, trying to make him Best Something of Anything, he is darn good at what he does. While this book kept the supernatural and horror to a minimum, it was still just as engrossing as his more usual books.
I think he oversimplified the "plight of woman" a bit, but that just pretty much goes to show -- he has a penis, so he's putting himself in a completely unfamiliar environment here. (Considering the time frame, it's just as unfamiliar to me, so this is a sense I get mostly from reading female authors who did experience it.) And some of his plot devices were a bit old and tired. And he used dialect, which tends to irritate me. He kept it to a minimum though, usually just replacing "and" with "n" and dropping "g"s off "ing" endings.
Other than those (slightly picky) problems though, I was quite satisfied. The characters are generally well drawn, and only as flat as human life allows. The narrative is quick, and keeps you involved from start to finish. 7/10
