"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it was a page-turner all the way. Very Gothic in feeling, with lots of likeable and odd characters, twists and turns of plot, and a very interesting and unusual protagonist. I never saw the "real" story coming at all, so it was great fun.

Thank you, judygreeneyes, for letting me keep this book for my PC. As promised, here is a review from when I read it previously:

9 stars: Super, couldn't put it down

-----------------------------

I loved this book. It immediately made me think of Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca. I will definitely be seeking out more of these gothic novels.

This is the story of Vida Winter, a reclusive and elusive novelist. She has finally said after 60 years, that she will tell her true life story... but what is the truth? And how does her story intertwine with Margaret Lea's, the person Winter has chosen to be her biographer?

One star off for what I felt was a weak ending. The last 50 pages or so did not hold me, and stretched credibility a bit too much. (I know, I shouldn't have those standards for a book such as this). Still, this book kept me engaged over a very hot Labor Day weekend...I sat on the couch and read it all in a day.

This copy was an ARC, which is going back to MissTree for her PC. If I run into a cheap/free copy at some point, I'll likely grab it. I suspect I'll want to both reread and share this book with others. That's about the highest compliment I can give it!
