One of just a small pile (:o) of 10 TBR books I bought at the Giant Book Sale today, in aid of the Phoenix Association (animal rescue), through whom we have just adopted our new cat, Ellie.

A sort of mystery love story set in Los Angeles in the 1930s at the beginning and mostly in the Philippines at the end of the 19th century. It's all set after a war on the islands, life in a hospital, a man trying to build the first 'flying machine' and some mysterious murders. It all comes together in the end, not entirely a happy ending but satisfactory for the reader. A 'different' novel that I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy at the beginning, but I persevered and was very glad I did.
