Sweet Misfortune: A Novel
13 journalers for this copy...
Sophie Jones has had more than her share of misfortune. Orphaned at a young age by a fatal car accident, her life has been the definition of tragedy, and every time she tries to move forward, her past drags her back. Her one consolation is discovering she's not alone when she whips up a batch of Misfortune Cookies that become a surprise hit with customers at her chocolate shop. Dipped in bitter chocolate, people delight in Sophie's unique handwritten fortunes far more than the unpalatable taste, even if reading, "Is it love or pity? Try not to dwell on it." isn't exactly the kind of thing to lift one's spirits.
It's not that Sophie is depressed, she's just a realist, and her luck seems true to rotten form when Garrett Black walks into her shop as a birthday surprise. He broke off their engagement with no explanation and disappeared. Now he wants to explain, but Sophie's far too wise to open herself up to him again. When he reacts with surprise and dismay to her Misfortune Cookies, Sophie sees the perfect opportunity to dodge the conversation.
She proposes Garrett take out a want ad in the local paper seeking sustainable happiness. When he gets a hundred responses she deems acceptable, she'll go out on one last date and hear him out. Sophie knows he has no chance of winning, but fate may have other ideas.

I trust this book will find a new reader at the March meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers at the Joshua Tree Café.
Picked up at monthly bookcrossing meeting. Need more time to read!
I LOVED this book! It was quirky, funny, sad, happy, romantic. It was all about misfortune but really all about happiness. A great book that I can't wait to pass on!
I am taking this book to our monthly bookcrossers meet up at cravings - the second Saturday of every month- to pass on to the next reader.
Picked this up at the July book crossing meeting. Looking foward to reading it someday.
I enjoyed this book it was a fun read.
Taking this to the December book crossing meeting to be shared with another reader
a light read, which began as a ho-hum romance type of book but it became more as I continued to read. The message made me smile and was an appreciated reminder of what happiness is. Will pass it on at the book crossing meeting this weekend.
Picked up at the March Calgary Bookcrossing meetup.
Couldn't get into it...too many books to read...so passing it along.
I actually remember putting my name on this book! It looks like such a fun read. Looking forward to it!
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I like the theme of blame, and I like the idea of the misfortune cookies (so clever!). ... but when I don't like a book, it usually has to do with the writing style. All I'll say about this one is the characters all tend to overshare without prompting. Storywise, I felt like I was reading a Nicholas Sparks book.
Will be brought to the next Calgary BookCrossing meetup and handed off.

Picked up at today's meeting, came home with double the number of books that I brought, eek!
This was a sweet story. I enjoyed seeing the crash from multiple angles, it was interesting to see how lots of little actions caused it and how multiple people without seeing the whole picture thought they were at fault.

Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing February meet-up. Romance isn't exactly my thing, but the fortune cookies in this sound hilarious, so I'll give it a shot.
Boy, this book should come with a warning: "Caution, this book contains an overly saccharine plot; will put you into a diabetic coma." I started to take a liking to the premise, with the whole getting 100 replies about happiness, but then the book didn't follow up on it. Sure, you could argue that the 100 replies isn't the point of the book - it's more about Sophie and Garrett moving on from the tragic pasts - but with so much set-up, you expect to see more of the letters and replies. I was also not a fan of the writing style. There was way too much telling and not enough showing. The Misfortune Cookies were amusing and I was left craving chocolate after reading this book, so I guess there's that.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing March meet-up.
Picked up this book at the March meetup at Cravings.
This was a fun read. Loved the idea of the personal ad for happiness. It was a fast read that was entertaining.
Taking this to the March meeting at Cravings.
Definitely an easy read book with an interesting concept on selling "mis"fortune cookies that Sophie created. As a child Sophie lived through a horrific car accident that took the lives of her family along with others on a rainy night. Sophie carries the survival guilt into her adult life which impacted her entire outlook and when her fiancée Garret leaves ... she attempts to own that too.
What a great character in Alex! loved him.

an easy read which took me less than a day. Bringing to the next meeting.
Just picked up at last meeting. Haven't read yet.
This is the story of Sophie Jones who has had more than her share of tragedy in her lifetime. Every time she tries to move forward her past pulls her back. She whips up a batch of Misfortune cookies for her chocolate shop. Her cookies have hand written fortunes of gloom, but become very popular. She realizes that happiness is like chocolate-sweet but gone too soon. Her ex-fiance comes into her life again and takes out a want ad in the local paper seeking sustainable happiness. The book is funny and charming.
Got this from L-Marie so that I could get it back into circulation.
I am adding this to Book Box 1 so that it can find a new reader. This is our solution to COVID and not being able to meet in person. Hopefully it will find a new reader.
After 10 years and many readers, I am returning this to my Permanent Collection. May be wild released at a future date.
