I rescued this from a charity shop in Ivybridge yesterday, keeping an eye out for books during the West Country leg of our touring holiday. I've read and enjoyed three Thursday Next novels and expect to enjoy this first in the Nursery Crimes Division series as well. I hope to see Jasper Fforde at the UK Unconvention in Swindon at the weekend so plan to read this over the next few days ....

Having found this in Ivybridge, I made the time to read it before the UK Uncon - and I'm writing these notes a few minutes after listening to Jasper Fforde talk about his books, his writing and the publishing method etc. As might be expected, he was amusing, entertaining and totally engaged with his audience, most of whom were hanging on his every word :-) And I was so pleased to have added this to my knowledge of his books!
The reading experience was, of course, totally surreal. I couldn't read it on its own but had to intersperse it with a 'normal' story - otherwise I'd have been suffering from total Surreality Overload. It's surreal - there's no other word for it. To read this book is to enter an unreal, alternative world where nothing is quite what it seems!
The question is: Did he jump or was he pushed? When Humperdinck Jehoshaphat Alyosius Stuyvesant van Dumpty aka Humpty Dumpty fell off his wall, was it suicide or murder? And if it was murder, then who's to blame?
Great fun!

Just finished this book yesterday, thoroughly enjoyed it. I've found I really like Fforde's style, it's funny and has the right speed. At no point in the book did I feel I knew who did it, which I actually think is a tiny bit of a shame, as I love growing surer who the perpetrator was over the book, to be completely caught off-guard by someone who made complete sense from the beginning. Nonetheless, I did not expect this ending, this was -slightly- outside my box of thinking ;) (Surreal is a word that well describes Fforde's universe) I look forward to whenever the next book in this series will cross my path and I get to read that :)

Lovely book. I read this after hearing Jasper Fforde talk at the UnCon and I remember thinking I have got to get me some of that. :-) It's quite out there, this Ffordian universe, and still works perfectly well as a whodunnit. Really enjoyed it.
