A first novel which became a major US film. From the wealthy homes of pre-Revolutionary China to downtown San Francisco, this is the story of four mothers and their first-generation Chinese-American daughters; two generations of women struggling to come to terms with their cultural identity.

Picked up (and mostly read) in the holiday house in Wales. The owner said that I could take the book as I was about 20 pages from the end as we were leaving and was returning it to her library. The owner had previously started a book exchange group in the village and was thrilled to know that the book will continue its journey in the wider world.

This is a very evocative, well written story about a slice of the lives of eight women. Four of these women are of Chinese origin and immigrants into America and the other four are their first generation American born daughters.

There is a feeling of culture lost and found and mother daughter relationships likewise lost and found. The stories of the original Chinese womenare all harrowing in their different ways and all keep their individual stories hidden from their offspring but there is an overarching miasma of gentle, patient nurturing and new beginnings. Men only play a subsidiary part in these tales of the women.

I really enjoyed this book and was glad that I got to finish it (I thought I'd have to leave the last 20 -25 pages at one time). I'm really encouraged to read more from this author, this being her first book, and I think I do have another in my TBR pile somewhere.

The Joy Luck Club – Amy Tan :: Many thanks Flutterbies9 for this surprise postal RABCK, and apologies for my delay in making a journal entry on it! Now I’m uncertain if this arrived on Saturday the 25th of September or 2nd of October, hum… it’s welcome non-the-less. It looks like wonderful read. Currently I’m reading books for my Halloween, Not-So-Secret, gift giving parcels and then I’ll be onto my Christmas selection for more Not-So-Secret parcels so this will be popped onto a TBR for the moment.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Casting a steely ‘rationalising’ eye over some book piles prior to scooting out in the hopes of meeting a visiting German BookCrosser and I’ve found this. Books I feel I ‘ought-to-read’ rather than books I am ‘desperate-to-read-right-now’ are a staple of my book piles, well as much as I am sure they are a staple of others collections. Anyhow, this one of the former got ferreted out for instant release.

German Bookscosser busy elsewhere, OK so it was a long-shot anyway, non-the-less this is off travelling. Pressed this into the hands of another keen reader whom I hope finds either it or both it and BookCrossing interesting. BookCrossing burble to follow - Happy reading, cheers rainbow3
