I read this several years ago and thought it was one of the stranger books I had read. I hope others will read it—I'd love to read others' journal entries to get an idea of what different people think of it.
Trade paperback, 344 pages
From the back cover:
Dr. Marcus Gallagher would like to rid the Earth of genetically inherited disease. A noble goal shared by many in his profession, but Dr. Gallagher wants to reduce disease by eliminating the people who carry "defective" genes. He has identified a biological marker for one genetic disease and developed a virus designed to identify and kill the carriers of the gene.
To carry out his plan, Dr. Gallagher needs talented scientists. To control them, he has established an isoltated outpost on Bloodsworth Island in the Chesapeake Bay where promising candidates are subjected to a cult-like indoctrination process. At the beginning of the book one of theose candidates, a research physician named Gene Nolan, begins to understand the scope and implications of the work on Bloodsworth Island.
