I so enjoyed her Fugitive Pieces that I bought this book new!
Civil engineering as a shaper of lives, a moulder of landscapes - the shattering dislocations, losses and new vistas wrought by the Aswan dam, the St Lawrence Seaway. Told as a mosaic of lives and emotions. She writes beautifully about loss and love:
'I still have no word for that depth of sadness [years after a partner's death]. It is almost a different kind of sight; everything beautiful, a branding.'
