Is it fair to buy a book just to make fun of it? You bet it is. And I'm going to send this one around on a bookring for people to take their best shots. The following is the cover blurb:

As the new millennium begins, millions of computers throughout the world will begin to crash. The lights will go out where the computers that run the electric power grid fail to make the transition to the next century. Many government agencies and businesses will be unable to function as their essential computer programs either shut down or produce false data. The failure to correct this massive problem before the Year 2000 deadline will threaten jobs, our food, and our finances. Virtually every part of our complex society is vulnerable because every system is interlinked with sophisticated computers. The Year 2000 Crisis will be the most devastating and expensive problem in history. This crisis may set the stage for the coming world government that was prophesied to arise in the last days...

Thrift store find.

WARNING: DIATRIBE AHEAD. To be (somewhat) fair, I'm sure the author was perfectly sincere. But this kind of millennial nonsense along with that one-world government/last days bullshit is based on faulty theology, and the people who loudly and vocally espouse this crap give me a headache. And, by virtue of the guilt-by-association principle, give more mainstream and rational Christians a bad reputation to boot. END DIATRIBE. Whew.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest....Okay, the bookring will offer its participants a chance to giggle at the sheer silliness of expecting the world to end when the clocks clicked over to 2000. Three and a half years ago. When nothing happened. Nada. Not even one little glitch. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Ha.

The MILLENNIUM MELTDOWN bookring has formed, and will consist of three (count 'em, three!) members:

fly46
caligula03
and then back to me, avanta7

What's with all the numbers? LOL

Each party should make three separate journal entries: one when the book is received; one for the review/response; and one when it is sent to the next person in line. But of course, feel free to make interim journal entries as you read if you are so inclined.

Please PM the next one in line when you are ready to send the book off.

Have fun!

13 May, 2004.
I am not going to sit here and explain myself.
Just know that this book was stalled with me for a number of reasons. Many were beyond my control. Some were not.
Whether or not I have read this book - and regardless of how badly I wanted to read it - it's going.
A period of my life is changing, and with it, out must go quite a bit.
I am moving to Nashville in a few weeks, save an apocalypse. Also sans apocalyps, I am thus doing a mass exodus of books.
Regardless of any feelings or ill will towards me, I assure you that I have kept this book safely in my care. It was in the company of other books that have kept it from being lonely. It was probably even read by my mother who, sans an act of God, will not come and journal the books no matter how many times I try to convince her to.
I still don't have any money, but I have just enough to put this in a box and ship it off to nyisutter, who has graciously offered to send these to whoever their next intended participant is.

Goodbye little book. Be well loved and have a good life.

Received this in a box of books I am helping Fly46 move on. Will contact next member and send it on its way.

The book arrived at my new address. It's one of two books that are the first to arrive to the new address. Will read it as soon as I can.

I had to stop reading when I made the mistake of reading the back cover. The whole coming of an economic crisis as wrought by the antichrist was just too much. Minus that comment, the book had been a rather quaint albeit paranoid look at the rolling over of the numbers in 2000. Not much happened. Yes, a few ATMs and credit card machines had trouble reading the cards that expired with dates as 2000 and higher and some mortgages caculated payments incorrectly but these problems were fixed.

No lights went out. There's no reason for them to have. The power grid predates computers by 60 or more years! The power grid is far more vulnerable to trees, weather and animals. Train switching systems may be automated but they don't care what date it is! I could go on but there's no point.
