This was picked as our Bookclub read for September as Paul Magrs is a Manchester based author and had agreed to come to the meeting to discuss one of his books.

This is the first in the series of 'Brenda and Effie' books and the blurb on the back says:

Brenda has come to Whitby to run a B&B in search of some peace and quiet. She and her best friend Effie like nothing better than going out for tea and keeping their eyes open for any of the mysterious goings-on in town.

And what with satanic beauty salons, more than illegal aliens, roving psychic investigators and the frankly terrifying owner of the Christmas Hotel there is no shortage of nefarious shenanigans to keep them interested.

But the oddest thing in Whitby may well be Brenda herself. With her terrible scars, her strange lack of a surname and the fact that she takes two different shoe sizes, Brenda should have known that people as, well, unique as she is, just aren't destined for a quiet life.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were great and the book is really well written. There are various different stories held together by the underlying story of Brenda and who/what she is. What I really liked is that the book is written in such a way that it is a very matter of fact story but the events and the characters are all very fantastical and not matter of fact at all. Although the events are bizarre they are treated as entirely possible and almost normal and the human characters make it all seem very down to earth.

A great book that I look forward to discussing and I hope to read the rest of the series soon.

I really enjoyed this book, very entertaining and quite a few quirky little twists and turns. Very enjoyable.

Arrived safe and sound yesterday, thank you very much Stubee. I'm looking forward to reading this (although it may have to wait until the end of May when my OU course finishes!)

Do let me know if you would like anything from my availables in exchange - either now or in the future :-)

After the first few pages it turned out this was not my cup of tea. To be wild released in Whitby in the near future.
