This is a place of mystery...a sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.

Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Shadow of the Wind

Gerda Persson has lain dead for three days. Her life seems to have been quite ordinary - until the freezer in her home is opened. It is full of books, neatly stacken and wrapped in clingfilm, a thick layer of ice covering them - all by the same prize-winning author, all with handwritten dedications to Gerda.

What story do these books have to tell? And what is their connection to a young boy found abandoned in an amusement park? Shadow is an utterly compelling novel of dark family secrets, murder and betrayal, which will keep you gripped until its final, thrilling revelations.

******

I am not a huge follower of crime and thriller books but this one was shortlisted for the CWA International Dagger 2009 and I was interested in the description on the book cover.

Unfortunately it was not my cup of tea and I found most of the characters despicable. I struggled to get through the first three quarters of the book and very nearly threw it aside. However the ending *was* quite good even if it did further convince me about how unlikeable the main protagonists in the story were!
