Georgina is a Londoner in her her mid twenties. She has considerable musical talent, is well educated, and has a rather charming if shameless manner. On the other hand, she believes herself to be plain, dresses haphazardly, and is incredibly naïve on the subjects of love and flirtation; she has never had a boyfriend. She has an inventive imagination and loves children.
Her parents are the live-in employees of successful businessman James Leamington. Leamington is 49 and has a loveless, childless marriage with Ellen. He has watched with affection as "Georgy" grew up, and has treated her as if he were her second father. He provided her excellent education and a studio for her in his own home, in which she teaches dance to children.
Georgy's flatmate is her so-called best friend, the beautiful Meredith, who works as a violinist in an orchestra, but is otherwise a shallow woman who lives for her own hedonistic pleasures. She treats the meekly compliant Georgy like an unpaid servant.
Georgy's life becomes more complicated when Leamington shows that his feelings for her have become more than fatherly, and the boyfriend of her room mate falls for her.
Georgy is young, gregarious and fun - she is also large, self-confessedly ugly and desperate for love. As she struggles through a maze of conflicting demands and emotions, Georgy discovers that sex, a man and marriage are not everything and that life has other alternatives to offer.
First published in 1965 this was made into a cult film directed by Silvio Narizzano and starring Lynn Redgrave as Georgy. The title song, performed by Australian band The Seekers, became a hit single.
Margaret Forster (born 25 May 1938) is a British author who has written many successful novels, including Lady's Maid (1990), Diary of an Ordinary Woman (2003), Have the Men Had Enough? (1989) and The Memory Box (1999), two memoirs, Hidden Lives (1995) and Precious Lives (1998), and several acclaimed biographies, most recently Good Wives (2001) and a fictionalised biography of the artist Gwen John, Keeping the world away (2006). She wrote Rich Desserts and Captain's Thin (1997).

I found Georgy to be a very lovable character and as I thought she deserved to be treated better that she was, I wanted everything to work out for her as. The ending was not what I would have chosen for her but she did seem to end up exerting control over her own life – the feelings of James Leamington for her were a bit creepy I thought.
Thought that I would offer this book as a ray.

I don't think that 'liked' is the right word for how what I thought about this book. I didn't like any of the characters even Georgy. I thought she could have enjoyed life more & stopped crying. Jos & Meredith used the baby to get what they wanted without caring, perhaps James was the best of them.
I'd heard the song but didn't realise there was a book until I saw this ray. It's a interesting read & I'm glad I read it.
Thanks for sharing bookowl1000
Will PM mafarrimond for the address.

What a good read! The characters didn't have particularly likable personalities but I enjoyed them immensely. One of those kitchen sink type dramas that the 50s and 60s seemed to produce a lot of and which I have enjoyed reading in the past. Thank you for sharing the book with me. I have the next readers address and it will be in the post soon.

This was an enjoyable read, even though I didn't really like any of the characters. It reads very easily and I finished it in 2 days, which is quite fast for me. I found it quite funny that George thought her father was rather stupid in his attitude towards James Leamington, but she acted somewhat the same with Meredith (and she was really horrible)..
I didn't expect that twist at the end, but I guess that would be the best solution.
I just noticed that I'm the last on the list, will try to continue this bookray and offer it in the bookrings/rays forum :)
Edit 1/1/2011: Continuing the bookray..

Arrived!! Thank you Tsjara for the lovely Greetings Card, and tea samples :))
2011.02.25.
This story was not as much as good that the "Memory Box", which I previously read from her, it couldn't hold my attention, maybe there were too many things, different relationships put into a short story.. Maybe I should look for the movie...
