I like William Boyd - 'Restless' was excellent, but I was disappointed with this one, which was like a cross between ‘The 39 Steps’, ‘North by North-West’ and ‘The Constant Gardener’. A young climatologist arrives in London for a job interview and, as a result of a chance encounter, finds himself on the run, suspected of murder. Pursued by the police and a ruthless hit man (shades of Neil Gaiman's ‘Neverwhere’ as well), he loses himself in the underworld. He eventually assumes another identity and, with a policewoman, attempts to bring down the pharmaceutical company which is really behind the murder of which he is suspected. Convoluted, unlikely and, ultimately, unsatisfying, I re-read the glowing reviews on the cover in disbelief...
