Another tiger to go... after the first one took the wild road.

Hope this is bit more tamed and keeps on the track, all the way back home.

Overall I liked the book. I enjoyed the story, it is very well written. I didn't know what to think of the narrator though. Certainly didn't find him very likable and that made it difficult for me to get into the story at first. I was about to give up, just not being in the mood for this kind of book. In the end I'm glad I didn't give up, it was a good book!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

The book is now (finally) on its way to Tsjara.

My apologies for the delay, but my roomie asked if she could also read the book. She lived India for a while and she told me she truly enjoyed reading the book. She said she could hear the people talking and smell the scents of India while reading.

It's here! (I had almost forgotten about this one :p) Thanks for sending glitterbee! I'm quite curious about this one, looking forward to read it. I do have a couple of bookrings in front though, somehow they always arrive at the same time :s But will get to it as soon as I can. Thanks for organizing the ring ruzena!

Update January 18th: I'm about 2/3 into the book now, quite interesting though I'm not sure what to think of the narrator...
Hayes13 already has a copy of the book, so I will be sending it to spoiledrotten when I'm finished.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I finished reading the book a couple of days ago.. still not sure what to think of it. Especially of Balram, I guess you have to admire how he escaped from the Darkness or the "Chicken Coop", but I didn't find him very likeable (rather amoral at times). But he tells his story with sarcasm, and it's quite humorous sometimes (and harsh at other times). It is an interesting view of the class struggles in India, the contrast between the rich and the poor, but also of the politics and globalization...
(I wonder if Premier Wen Jiabao has read the book.. since it is sort of addressed to him :p)

The White Tiger is now travelling across the ocean, on its way to Spoiledrotten :)
Happy reading!

Received in the mail today. Please be patient. I have two reads in front of this one. Thanks so much for sending and including me.

I too found this to be an interesting story, not something I would normally read. I liked Belram's honesty even if I didn't agree with some of the things he has done. I have the next person's addy & will mail next week. Thanks so much for including me and sending it on.

Forgot I was waiting for this...almost done with my last book so should be able to start by the weekend.

Journal Entry 12 by tiatia at Springfield, Virginia USA on Thursday, June 9, 2011
Started it, got sick, started it, work travel, started it, out of the country, started it, BC Convention, started it, sick for 10 days, started it, misplaced it, played catch up for work, found it, started it...now done. Thank you for your patience.
I enjoyed the details of ordinary life and the class difference when the media would have us believe the caste system is gone. The "rooster coop" syndrome resonated --- especially for many indigeneous peoples. Thank you for sharing. I will get the next address and pop it into the mail ASAP!

Thank you, tiatia, for bringing this along to the meet-up, especially since you had such a hassle finding parking at the OBCZ! I just got another bookring book last week that is in line ahead of this one, but I should have it done by the end of June at the latest. Then it will be off to valpete.

Journal Entry 15 by wing6of8wing at Silver Spring, Maryland USA on Thursday, June 30, 2011
Finished this one on the plane yesterday -- very interesting look inside the real India. It is common knowledge that the caste system still exists in some form, unacknowledged, but this was a good introduction to what that world is like even in modern times. Some parts of this book were very hard to read (which was, after all, the point), but I think it was definitely worthwhile. I can see why it won awards. I found his comments on the Rooster Coop most enlightening and the theory makes a great deal of sense.

Will send this off to valpete today or tomorrow.

Thanks for sending this. I do have some before this, so since it is the end of the line before I return it to Ruzena, it will be some time before I get to it. If you find I'm taking too long, please send me a reminder. Thanks for your patience and for including me in this Ring.

Journal Entry 18 by valpete at Walnut Creek, California USA on Thursday, December 8, 2011
This was a difficult and disturbing book to read, as I have the feeling most of the things portrayed are accurate. It did give me an insight of what it is to be rich and to be poor in India. Balram is the narrator of this darkly comical view of life in contemporary India. He was born in the "darkness," inhabited by the working class and rural poor, as contrasted to those who are wealthy, living in the "light." The story tells how Balram is able to escape the "rooster coop."
