Product Description
It is 1939. Eva Delectorskaya is a beautiful 28-year-old Russian emigree living in Paris. As war breaks out she is recruited for the British Secret Service by Lucas Romer, a mysterious Englishman, and under his tutelage she learns to become the perfect spy, to mask her emotions and trust no one, including those she loves most. Since the war, Eva has carefully rebuilt her life as a typically English wife and mother. But once a spy, always a spy. Now she must complete one final assignment, and this time Eva can't do it alone: she needs her daughter's help.

I absolutely loved this book, and the two time frames worked so well. We meet Eva Delectorskaya in 1939, a young Russian girl recruited as a spy for the British Secret Service by a man called Lucas Romer, and we meet Sally Gilmartin (along with her daughter, Ruth, and grandson, Jochen) during the long hot summer of 1976. They are both the same person, and we experience life as a spy during World War Two, and then later on in 1976 we find out what became of the young Eva. This is a fantastic story, and very believeable indeed. In fact, the American based British Secret Service located in Rockefeller Center, New York was very real, and I believe Roald Dahl worked there producing fake stories for publication in newspapers to help convince America to join the war and help us to (eventually) win it! As it worked out, Pearl Harbor then happened, so they didn't need any more convincing after that...

You must read this, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :0)

Once I'd picked this up I found I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and enjoyed the juxtaposition/irony of Eva's back ground and who the betrayer was and for whom. Sorry can't say more or it would be a spoiler. It was also refreshing to read a spy story set in WW2 and have it focus on the US more than Europe. Coming from Oxford, I also really enjoyed the Oxford connection in the modern day part of the book.
