From the back:
It is 1536 and the expert swordsman Jean Rombaud has been brought over from France by Henry VIII to behead Anne Boleyn. But on the eve of her execution Rombaud swears a vow to the ill-fated queen. He promises to bury her six-fingered hand, symbol of her rumoured witchery, at a sacred crossroads. Yet in a Europe savaged by religious war, the hand of this infamous Protestant icon is so powerful a relic that many will kill for it.
October 2010: This was a terrific book. It makes me think of the Clive Cussler books where the hero finds himself time after time in precarious situations. And still each time they miraculously find a way out. I love such adventures! :-)

Received through Paperbackswap.com. It's a terrific read, loosely based on history, but taking place in a wonderfully conceived dopleganger universe. The unlikely hero is Jean Rombaud, the French swordsman imported by Henry VIII to behad his troublesome second wife when she failed to give him the male heir for which he married her. Little girls, like her daughter Elizabeth (she of the Elizabethan Age) didn't count. Jean bonds with his "client" Anne and takes on a quest. There is magic, war, corruption in very high places, adventure of all types, battles on land and sea--you can't put it down. Strongly recommended to one and all who love adventure, sword fighting, and a great yarn.
